Job Vacancy: Te Urunga Tū Kaihautū Tauranga

Pūhoro STEMM Academy is looking for an enthusiastic Te Urunga Tū Kaihautū to help establish and grow our presence in Tauranga – a new region launched in early 2025, with delivery to Year 11 and Year 12 tauira commencing in 2026.

Pūhoro STEMM Academy is looking for an enthusiastic Te Urunga Tū Kaihautū to help establish and grow our presence in Tauranga – a new region launched in early 2025, with delivery to Year 11 and Year 12 tauira commencing in 2026.

This role will work closely with our established team in Rotorua, alongside two Kaihautū based there. You will contribute to building regional systems, school relationships, and industry connections that support long-term STEMM success for rangatahi Māori.

About Pūhoro STEMM Academy

Pūhoro is a kaupapa Māori organisation dedicated to accelerating Māori achievement in STEMM. We operate nationally, serving thousands of tauira through culturally grounded education, industry partnerships, and experiential learning. Our programmes strengthen academic outcomes, career pathways, and cultural identity.

The Role

As the Te Urunga Tū Kaihautū in Tauranga, you will:

  • Deliver Pūhoro programmes in local secondary schools, mentoring and supporting rangatahi
  • Facilitate workshops, wānanga, and events that weave STEMM and mātauranga Māori
  • Collaborate with the Rotorua team to align delivery, resources, and events
  • Build strong relationships with schools, whānau, iwi, tertiary partners, and industry
  • Support students to navigate pathways into tertiary education and employment

This role is ideal for someone who values collaboration, loves building new relationships, and is excited to help shape a new region from the ground up.

About You

We are seeking someone who:

  • Is passionate about kaupapa Māori and rangatahi success
  • Has experience working with rangatahi and whānau
  • Has knowledge in STEMM and/or education suitable for NCEA-level mentoring
  • Has excellent relationship management and communication skills
  • Is confident in te ao Māori (te reo Māori proficiency is desirable but not essential)
  • Thrives in a collaborative, innovative, and fast-moving environment

Position Details

Location: Tauranga (regional travel required, Pūhoro vehicle provided)
Contract: Full-time, 12-month fixed-term (37.5 hours per week)
Salary Band: $60,500 – $83,000
