KURA PŪRAU: From the awa to the lab: a day of discovery, data, and te reo Māori.

Last month, Pūhoro hosted KURA PŪRAU, bringing together Years 11-13 students from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Manawatū, Mana Tamariki and Te Kura-ā-Iwi o Ngāti Kauwhata for a day of hands-on learning focused on te taiao and wai.

The event marked a significant milestone for Pūhoro, delivering its first wānanga entirely in te reo Māori.  

The wānanga represents an important step in developing a STEMM model that responds to the identities, learning needs and immersion learning environments of wharekura.  It also reinforces Pūhoro's wider goal of growing and strengthening STEMM education delivered through te reo Māori.

The central focus of the day was wai (water). Guided by Hannah Rainforth and Pūhoro staff, students explored water quality through water testing, identifying aquatic invertebrates, and collecting environmental data.

Through these hands-on experiences and opportunities to engage with Māori professionals working in STEM, an important message was reinforced: te reo Māori is a language that can carry all fields of knowledge, including STEM.

Rangatahi valued the opportunity to learn through experiential learning in the classroom and the taiao.

“I tino rata au ki te kaupapa nei i te mea koinei te waa tuatahi e mahi ana i aua momo mahi peeraa i te pH, te kaute aua mea katoa, noo reira i whai wheeako hou. Te rawe hoki o ngaa koorero i tuku mai e Paa Api raaua ko Whaea Ani. Te miiharo hoki.”

Another tauira reflected on the practical learning and the positive impact of Hannah’s knowledge and wairua:

With te reo Māori serving as the primary language, the wānanga, brought to life the vision of Sir Toby Curtis, that science wānanga be in te reo Māori.

By bringing together te reo Māori, mātauranga Māori, and STEM, we are nurturing the Māori leaders of tomorrow so they can thrive in both te ao Māori and the world of science and innovation.
